Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely service used condition German WWII Kriegsmarine Küstenartillerie (Navy Coastal Artillery) EM/NCO Schirmmütze Visor Cap, with a lovely "Crushed" shape. This "saddle-form" shape is highly desirable, accomplished by removing the crown support stiffener ring. The cap shows high quality fabrication, made with typical feldgrau (Field Gray) green / gray wool with a flaschengrün (dark bottle-green) "badge cloth" band and a traditional high front, with matching bottle green piping around the top. This is very similar to the Army Heer visor cap, except that there are no corps colors around the green band, and the insignia are Kriegsmarine Gold.
We checked under the sweatband, and this cap is actually named to the owner! It looks to read:
M.A. Feldwebel
Edmund Kern
Leh. 28260
The writing is in Kurrentschrift, an older form of Germanic script writing, which unfortunately has many letters looking almost identical, so we had trouble trying to decipher what it reads. However, we are fairly certain that it is "Edmund", which would be written "Edmŭnd" in Kurrent. His rank is given as M.A. Feldwebel, or Marineartillerist Feldwebel, equivalent to a Petty Officer 1st Class in the U.S. Navy. Definitely some fantastic research potential here!
It is decorated with a well detailed stamped gold washed alloy Wehrmachtadler National Eagle insignia on the peak and and an open gold washed cast aluminum oak leaf and acorn wreath surrounding an aluminum and metal tri-color cockade on the band. These are in very good shape, and have a lovely patina on the gold washed components, particularly the eagle, which has had the bronze powder oxidize to green. The cap has the correct black patent leather EM/NCO chin strap with double buckles. The visor / peak on this cap is the typical black-finished "vulcanfibre" pressed composite material. It is in great shape, still well-attached to the cap, and is checkered green on the underside.
The cap is lined with blue rayon, which shows a good amount of staining from use. We do not see any evidence that it ever had any type of sweat shield on the inner crown, and there are no maker markings we can see. The sweatband is made from pressed paper faux leather, and is now in delicate condition. It has torn through in two areas, and there are numerous smaller tears and wrinkles in the material.
This is a very nice, high quality German Kriegsmarine Coastal Artillery peak visor cap, offered for sale in very good condition with a beautiful saddle-form shape. These are quite rare, and this is only the second example that we have ever had! Ready to display!
